Tryout Policy of Sooke and District Minor Hockey Association
All players attending a tryout with Sooke Minor Hockey should expect to be
evaluated on the first ice session. Please arrive with all of your gear and ready to
try your best. All players will be evaluated on the current performance not prior
play. Tryouts are usually held the last week of summer (i.e. week before school
goes in). If you are unable to make tryouts due to prior commitments you need to
notify the head coach of Sooke Minor Hockey at
headcoach@sookeminorhockey.ca before tryouts commence.
Tryouts will be designed by the Head Coach of Sooke Minor Hockey. They will
consist of skills and drills and a minimum of one scrimmage game. The tryouts will
consist of a minimum of two ice times; all players arriving on time will be spoken
to in advance of stepping on the ice by the Sooke Minor Hockey head coach about
what will be expected of them on the ice. All skills and drills will also be discussed
at this time. All skills and drills will be demonstrated once on ice by an attending
adult.
The coaches on the ice during each divisional tryout will not be the bench staff for
that division.
All evaluators will not be part of the bench staff except for the head coach.
The team head coach has the right to carry 2 to 3 extra players into as many pre-
season games as he/she chooses before making final cuts.
All final cuts will be discussed with the Sooke Minor Hockey Head Coach.
The head coach of each team will conduct an in person exit interview with each
player.
All evaluators will be non-biased. Goaltenders will be evaluated by those with
goaltending experience.
The recreational teams will be evaluated during practice times to enable Sooke
Minor Hockey to create teams of equal strength. Final rosters will not be declared
until the Head Coach of Sooke Minor Hockey determines the teams are equal and
balanced.
